404

Damn, we lost a page and we're so sorry that it isn't available.[١]

or

A 404[٢] error page and not actually Fatboy Slim tells visitors a web page doesn't exist.

Good text includes a clear heading like "Page Not Found," a simple reason why (such as a bad link or typo), and a helpful link back to home or anywhere.[٣]

But then you know that allready so here are some fun facts about 404 pages. Bazinga.[٤]

Wikipedia tells us that a 404 error can sometimes be confused with a DNS error.

A DNS error means the web address points to a server that doesn’t exist, while a 404 means the server is reachable, but it can’t find the specific page you’re looking for.

So "sorry that this page isn't available" is from the 4xx Status Error Codes and the 5xx Status Error Codes which are Server Side.

A 404 error tells visitors and search engines that a page doesn’t exist. It usually happens when a link is outdated, a URL is typed incorrectly, or a page has been removed.

A 404 page is triggered when someone tries to visit a page that isn’t available. This can happen because of a broken link, a deleted page, a moved URL, or a typo in the address bar.

A well-designed 404 page doesn’t improve rankings by itself, but it can reduce bounce rates and keep visitors on your site longer. Clear navigation and links to other pages also help search engines understand your site structure.

Keep it simple, on-brand, and user-friendly.

Offer clear instructions or links to popular pages, provide a search function, and make the page visually consistent with your website. Adding a small creative touch, like humor [٥] or an illustration, can make the page more engaging.

Start with a clear, friendly message explaining the page can’t be found. Keep your branding consistent[٦], include helpful navigation like links or a search bar, and consider adding visuals or personality.

For those of you still stuck in 2009 then a certain Mr Ethan Marcotte would smile.

He's like the grand-daddy of Responsive.[٧]

Adjust to different screen sizes and devices. Use a responsive design so text, images, and navigation elements scale correctly. Keep buttons large enough to tap, avoid clutter, and test the page on smartphones and tablets to make sure users can easily read the message.

Renny Gleeson[٨] highlights in his 404, the story of a page not found TED Talk “Little things, done right, matter. Well-designed moments build brands".

nutshell tell the user it might be an old link or the address has a typo.

nut we cannot find the page you are looking for. don't talk about Droids [٩] - it's not the '80's. Check the address or just click something.

Prologue

Say hello to the perfection of Cybele- tall, gorgeous, millionaire. She’s a supermodel by day and a kidnapper extraordinaire at night. When she took Princess Talia from the castle one night, the whole country was sent into chaos.

Princess Talia was the only successor to the throne, and her absence baffled the kingdom. Nobody knew that Cybele was the culprit, and no one would be able to guess her reason for it. Only she knew.

Watch Cybele, both our hero and villain for the story as she struggles to fulfill her wishes while trying to keep her feelings for the Princess in check.

Episode 1

"Let go of me you mongrel!"

I watched in fascination as the princess struggled against the ropes binding her ankles and wrist. She shook on the floor like a worm, her head twitching in different directions once in a while, no doubt searching for her captor, even whilst it was covered with a black cotton pillowcase.

"Unhand me buffoon and I'll tell my mother the queen to spare your life," she said indignantly.

Oooh! How lovely. As if her mother the queen could help her right now. This one was charming. It almost made me want to let go of her. Ha ha! As if. All that planning to infiltrate the castle and kidnap her would not go to waste. But while she was in my possession, I might as well have a little fun with her.

"I doubt your highness will spare my life if I let you go," I said to her. She stopped squirming in an instant. "You're a girl?" she asked with bathed breath. The corner of my mouth perked up into a smirk. "Last time I checked yes," I told her.

"What do you want from me? Do you want money? Power? Men? I can give you all of that." She tried to sit but it was too much of an effort, considering she was bound like that. I stifled a smile. "I have money," I said. "Lots of it in fact. Power comes with money, so that is not an issue. As for men. Well let's just say that I like women more."

"Then what do you want?" she asked in a small voice. I walked steadily to her and kneeled on the floor. Once I did, I brought her to a sitting position and leaned to her head so I could whisper. "I want your body."

notes

  1. We're just being polite when we say this.

  2. The connection between "404" and Fatboy Slim most notably links to the Roland SP-404 (and earlier SP-202/303) hardware sampler series, which legendary producer Norman Cook (Fatboy Slim) and various electronic artists have used for triggering vocal hooks, audio samples, and breakbeat loops in their workflow.

  3. By anywhere, we mean somewhere else relevant on the same website.

  4. Bazinga (spelled "Buzzinga" in the subtitles of DVD releases) is a word used by Sheldon Cooper to signal that what he said immediately before this utterance was to be taken as a joke. In later seasons, it becomes something of a catchphrase.

The word "Bazinga" was first used in the season 2 season finale, "The Monopolar Expedition" and last in Season 12 episode 4, "The Tam Turbulence". (Seasons 6 and 7 are devoid of it.) By this time Sheldon has developed a mediocre sense of humor and instead uses a peculiar form of laughter instead – both literally and sarcastically.

Notable episodes with Bazinga! include S05E07 "The Good Guy Fluctuation" (Leonard, who had just broken up with Priya via laptop camera/microphone, then gets frightened by Sheldon rising from his hiding spot under the cushions "Bazinga, punk. Now we're even.") and S03E14 "The Einstein Approximation" (Leonard unsuccessfully tries to pull Sheldon out of a ball pit, Sheldon keeps bobbing his head up to taunt Leonard with "Bazinga!" before hiding back down in the ball pit).

Though not a true Bazinga, it was mentioned once in Season 9. Penny used it after Sheldon mentioned that he planned to take Amy to the Wisconsin Sheep and Wool Festival for her birthday. She waited a few moments for the Bazinga, but was wrong.

  5. Humour, we also do sarcasm - see above.

  6. consistent branding is a must throughout the site as well as the 404. The identity and brand for JWLB IS that of direct, clear and concise TOV

Hence the irony yet scarcstic wit that this 404 error page is so long and full of external links taking you anywhere. See note ٥ concerning this.

  7. responsive design has only been around since 2010'ish so do we need to explain it....

But for those if you who have been under a rock for the past decades then its why websites go big and get smaller and look pretty on big screens and work on your iPhone, we even deal with Android but we don't really like them much

  8. Just who is Renny Gleeson and why does he matter... because he knows what he's talking about.

A strategist, creative entrepreneur, marketing executive, and TED speaker. He currently serves as the Managing Director of Marketing at RA Capital Management.

Throughout his career, Gleeson has bridged the gap between technology and human experience, working across game design, global brand advertising, and startup acceleration.

And also not a fan of anti-social smartphone-obsessed world often prioritises capturing an experience over actually living it. I bet you're reading this on your phone, aren't ya ?

  9. Hey, who doesn't like Star Wars but sorry to disappoint but Jedi don't exist, we're notbin Morroco, this isn't Comicon and that's the only place you're going to find R2 and C3-PO.

And now for something completely different all done in the best possible taste but you'll need your Credit Card PIN for this. 73
